What makes Silk Shirts so amazing?
There really are so many reasons to love silk shirts, but here’s a few of the main reasons why a silk shirt is ideal for any wardrobe.
- Silk shirts are ideal for any season and climate
One of the best parts about silk shirts is that they’re super breathable and absorbent. They have natural temperature-regulating properties that make them perfect to wear in any climate or season. In cold weather, they’ll retain the heat and in warmer months, they’ll help keep you cool and comfortable, expelling any excess heat.
- Wearing silk is great for your skin
For those of us with sensitive skin, silk shirts can be great for avoiding any nasty rashes or discomfort in your clothing. Silk is naturally hypoallergenic, making it a great choice of fabric for anyone with asthma, allergies, or sensitive skin. It also features a smooth and soft texture that has been proven beneficial for those with sensitive skin conditions, such as eczema.
While other natural fabrics such as cotton draw moisture away from your skin, despite being regarded as “sensitive-skin friendly”, silk encourages proper moisture balance in your skin.
- Silk fabrics are good for the environment!
Silk is well-loved for environmental reasons too. It’s biodegradable, taking only 1-5 years for 100% of silk to decompose in certain conditions. That’s a much faster process than synthetic textiles. But silk is also a renewable resource, uses less water, chemicals and energy than many other fibres.

Tips for how to care for your silk shirt
The only downside to silk fabrics is that they require a little extra love than normal fabrics. (Though, we guess it’s a bit like most things: the more love you put in, the more you get out!). We’ve been really careful to include a note on all our silk products to cold gentle machine wash only, because we want to make sure that you get the most value out of your silk fabric.
But here are a few other tips and tricks to make sure your silk fabric is long-lasting and truly worth the investment:
- Handwashing your silk shirts is actually the safest way to wash these delicate garments - just fill a basin with lukewarm to cold water, mix in a few drops of gentle detergent and soak the shirt fo three minutes, rinse with cold water and use a clean dry towel to gently absorb the moisture.
- But you CAN wash our shirts in the washing machine, just pop it in a mesh bag to protect it from any abrasive damage, make sure not to overload the machine, add silk wash or any delicate detergent for silk, and start a delicate cycle. Again, use a clean dry towel to genty absorb moisture.
- Be sure to hang on a hanger or drying rack carefully, in a manner that won’t crinkle or damage the fabric.
- Do not hang under direct sunlight ever - it will damage the fibres!
A silk shirt is a timeless addition to any wardrobe and is a valuable investment, especially if you take special care of it. Silk fabrics are perfect for any season, any style, and any occasion and our range at Cienna Designs will help you find a fit that blends beautifully with your personality.
